When Vern joined the Australian Property Institute in 1976, he was a young valuer based in Cunnamulla, beginning what would become a remarkable nearly five-decade relationship with the profession. Over that time, he built a distinguished career spanning Crown land administration, statutory valuations, and mediation work — but it is his dedication to the API and the people within it that we celebrate today.

Vern was elevated to Fellow in 2010–2012, a reflection of the esteem in which the profession holds him, and an honour well earned by those who had seen his commitment to the Institute firsthand.

For years, Vern served on the Brisbane CPD Committee, meeting monthly to plan events, source presenters, and keep the profession’s education calendar ticking along. He has been a regular at conferences and API functions, and a familiar, trusted face to members across Queensland.

His work with emerging valuers has been particularly special. Vern delivered his Student Mentor Presentation annually for many years — giving graduates a direct connection to practical experience and sound professional values. His yearly Statutory Valuation Presentation, reliably delivered after the updated land values were released each year, became something members could count on. Since October 2020, he has also given his time through the Report Review Panel and PVT assessment marking, supporting the next generation of valuers in reaching the standard the profession demands.

Vern has always believed in going out on top, and as he steps into a well-earned retirement, he does so with plenty ahead to look forward to — more time with family and continuing his community volunteering.
The API is grateful for everything Vern has contributed and wishes him all the best in this exciting new chapter. The graduates he guided and the members he supported along the way are a testament to the kind of professional he has been — and the kind of person he is.

Thank you, Vern. Here’s to what comes next!
