Remembering Ned Walsh: A Legacy of Excellence in the Valuation Profession

The Australian Property Institute and the broader valuation community mourn the passing of Ned Walsh, a Life Fellow of the Institute and a highly respected professional in the valuation and property profession.
Ned commenced his professional journey as a teacher in 1954 before transitioning to a career in valuation. His early experience in farming and agricultural instruction provided him with a strong foundation in rural and commercial valuations. From 1965 onwards, Ned held various roles in valuation with institutions such as the Commonwealth Bank, LJ Hooker, Richard Ellis Sallman & Seward, and Dillon Inkster Real Estate.
In 1977, Ned established his own valuation practice before returning to senior valuation positions with WJ Harper, Richard Ellis, Baillieu Knight Frank, and Gross Waddell, where he practiced up until his retirement in 2019.
Ned’s academic achievements were remarkable. He held a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Commercial Law) from Melbourne University, a Diploma of Agricultural Science from Dookie Agricultural College, and a Real Estate Management and Valuation Certificate from RMIT.
Beyond his own education, Ned was deeply committed to mentoring young professionals. For over 31 years, he served as a panel member for the Australian Property Institute’s Panel of Examiners and actively mentored emerging valuers since the 1970s. His dedication was further exemplified in 2006, when he became the first mentor in the Institute’s trial Mentor Programme for graduates.
After first joining the institute as a Provisional Associate in 1968, he was elevated to Associate in 1970. He was further recognised as a fellow in 1985 and elevated to Life Fellowship (API’s highest recognition) on 5 November 2010 for his incredible contributions to the profession. Ned was also an Associate of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria and a Licensed Auctioneer.
As a highly respected and valued member of the Australian Property Institute, Ned was known for his professionalism, integrity, and unwavering generosity in supporting colleagues, particularly younger members entering the profession. He sought no recognition for his contributions but was widely regarded as a true professional and mentor who made a lasting impact on the valuation profession.
Ned’s contributions to the valuation profession and the Australian Property Institute were profound, and his legacy will endure through the many professionals he mentored and inspired throughout his life.
The funeral service will be held at Stella Maris Church, 2 Charlotte Road, Beaumaris on the 11th of February 2025 with Rosary at 10:00am followed by the service which will start at 10:30am.
We extend our deepest condolences to Ned’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
