The Australian Property Institute (API) has been invited to be a member of the Federal Government’s Residential Energy Efficiency Disclosure Initiative (REEDI) Governance Forum.

The REEDI Governance Forum is made up of representatives from the Federal, State and Territory governments and key industry stakeholders. The aim of the REEDI Governance Forum is to:

  • provide oversight and support development and implementation of the national, residential homes disclosure of energy efficiency information framework
  • support continued development of the market environment for disclosure
  • assist with disclosure data and energy efficiency information.

The Framework sets out a national approach to assessing the energy performance of homes and providing energy performance certificates to consumers. The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS), which currently applies to new homes, provides a standardised approach to rating the energy efficiency of new homes by evaluating the design, materials and construction, as well as considering fixed appliances and on-site energy generation and storage.

The Government has started to expand NatHERS to existing homes, in a phased approach. The trials that were completed involved Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), lenders and API member property valuers. API, as the leading property professional’s membership association, was also chosen by the Government, as its professional education provider of choice to create the education module to collect the data, using MagicPlan.

This important governance forum appointment will ensure the API will have a seat at the table to support the Government’s objective to provide better information for Australian households to better understand their home’s running costs and identify cost-effective upgrades to bring down energy bills”.  John Winter, CEO API
