Since coming to Australia from the UK in 1996, I have been fascinated by the interest and knowledge of everyday Australians in property – and the emotions it drives! This nationwide passion was often reflected in my role as a restructuring adviser – from refinancing A-REITS during the GFC through to building out residential towers with defunct developers.

My familiarity with the work of the API grew through this experience, not just through dispute resolution clauses(!), but in appreciating the importance of accurate property, plant and equipment valuations when working on behalf of lenders and investors to rescue, sell and refinance businesses and projects.

This has given me real insight into the value the profession brings but also the challenges it faces, challenges which I can already see API is seeking to address.  So after retiring as Sydney Chairman of Grant Thornton in early 2021 (30+ years was enough after building and leading the financial advisory and consulting practices!), I was keen to take on interesting board roles in sectors I knew and understood – and leapt at the chance to join the API.

I now sit on several boards in the defence, professional services and health sectors and am also Managing Director at M&A Tax and Advisory specialists GreenMount in the Sydney CBD.

My passion outside of work is sailing, and at the same time that I retired from Grant Thornton, I also retired, after 14 years, as Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, home of the iconic Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht race.  That role too had a large property aspect as we proudly redeveloped the clubhouse and marina over a decade, reopening just in time to host the Invictus Games in late 2018 – and then of course closing due to COVID!

Married to Jude with a Snowboard Cross obsessed 16-year-old daughter Maya, we live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with a still boisterous but now slightly greying golden retriever and seemingly ageless cat!

My initial engagement with Diana, Amelia, the Board and Management team has been very positive and I was fortunate to be able to join the tail end of the latest strategic planning process – so I’m looking forward to making a strong contribution to the future of API!
