The valuation industry in Australia continues to lack diversity in gender and minority group representation, which has a profound impact on the future of the valuation profession. 

Why are so few women employed in valuation? And why is there continued drop-off of female valuers through their career term?  Given the opportunities the profession affords why aren’t we attracting a more gender and ethnically diverse workforce? 

Such lack of diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity and age has huge implications for both how the profession is defined, educated, how it can market itself and overall client perception. 

As global research demonstrates a lack of a diverse workforce has a significant impact on financial opportunities. Professions that do not attain a gender-balanced and diverse workforce risk missing out on the best talent and enhancing corporate performance.

Dr Dulani Halvitigala, Senior Lecturer - Property & Valuation | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
Dulani is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. She is the Program Manager for RMIT’s Bachelor of Applied Science Property and Valuation (Honours) program. Her background is property valuation and she currently teaches property valuation courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to joining academia, she practised as a property valuer. Her research interests are in the areas of property valuation and related issues, gender and diversity in the property sector, housing markets, new ways of working and their implications on corporate real estate, technology disruptions in real estate, and real estate markets in emerging economies. She has published her work in highly ranked international academic and industry journals and presented at highly ranked international conferences. She is a reviewer for several property academic journals.
Dr Judith Callanan, Associate Dean | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
Judith is the Associate Dean in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management. As Associate Dean she is responsible for the management of the Property and Valuation discipline, which includes undergraduate and postgraduate programs, staffing and strategic direction of programs. Prior to joining RMIT, she had sixteen years experience in senior management positions within the property industry, predominantly in asset management and property development. Her specialist areas while in industry have been in airport development and management.  Her current research interests are centred around housing, diversity within the property industry, and also the skills and technology required by future graduates. Over the last ten years she has also held committee positions within the Industry bodies:  Past President South Island branch of Property Council of New Zealand, Property Council of Australia - Woman & Diversity committee, and Education committee for API.
Associate Professor Rebecca Leshinsky, Lecturer | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology
Associate Professor Rebecca Leshinsky (PhD) teaches at RMIT University in the School of Property, Construction and Project management. She is a property barrister and has been involved in prior research on women in the legal profession. Her current research is centred in property law and land use planning & development.
