Description

Black swan events are unpredictable and unprecedented events with significant impact on economies. Due to the negative impacts associated with black swan events, they occupy the attention of Governments, businesses, and households. Black swan events can collapse economies and send countries into serious economic woes. Consequently, Governments usually deploy solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of black swan events on their economies. One solution that is becoming prominent is the use of quantitative easing (QE) as a means of reviving ailing economies during black swan events. QE, an unconventional monetary policy that makes credit available to households and businesses have been deployed in several countries including, Australia. Such a measure has a ripple effect and transmits into the housing market. In this study, we explore the relationship between these black swan events, quantitative easing and how it impacts on the Australian housing market.

Dr Peng Yew Wong, Lecturer | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | RMIT
Dr.Peng Yew Wong is a lecturer in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management of the RMIT University, a position he has held since 2016. Prior to his academia career Peng Yew was an expert in field of capital market and property investment. He assumed senior management and director roles in the United States of America and public listed companies in Asia, specialised in property investment and merger-acquisition exercises. His doctoral dissertation and publications explored the emerging determinants of in the Australian residential property market.   Peng Yew’s research findings received substantial industrial attentions resulting in wide ranging media publications since 2016. He successfully led a project team in his research effort and received a grant from the Australian Property Research & Education Fund titled “Black Swan Events, Quantitative Easing and the Australian Residential Property Market” in 2021. His expert opinion on the housing market was featured widely in the media platforms including those in overseas. On the topic of the Australian housing market and Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)’s cash rate, he was interviewed and his expert opinion was published in Channel 7, Triple-M and other local media platforms. On his research on the cross border housing investment and residential tourism, his research outputs were featured in the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) News, the AFR (Australian Financial Review), The Age and the Domain.com in year 2016 and 2017 respectively. The same was widely reported in more than 50 overseas online news portals. Peng Yew’s effort was recognised by the RMIT University and was invited to participate in the RMIT Media Start of the Year Awards 2016. Peng Yew delivered a keynote address in Shanghai, China under the collaboration of the RMIT’s Alumni and the Australian China Alumni Association and received invitation to speak from the Business School of East China Normal University in 2018. 
Dr Kwabena Mintah, Senior Lecturer | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | RMIT
Mintah is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. Mintah is an emerging scholar in property and housing market analysis, investment, valuation, and development. His research on alternative financial feasibility models for housing investment, development, and valuation has received considerable recognition among scholars and has since been published in leading academic and industry Journals. After working for several years in the property industry conducting market analysis for companies involved in housing development and investment, Mintah joined RMIT University after his PhD as a researcher. Prior to joining as a full time academic, Mintah served as a Sessional academic at The University of Melbourne, Australia. Teaching wise, he has taught many courses in the property discipline ranging from investments, valuation and research. Some recent researches that Mintah is involved in that demonstrate his skills include, house prices and relationship with financial development, transport infrastructure, and stock prices.  He is also involved in cross border real estate investment in the Australian property market, blockchain technology and land Issues in Ghana, black swan events, quantitative easing and the Australian residential property market. The outcomes of these projects have been several publications that has made suggestions to improve policies aimed at shaping the Australian property market. Mintah has been successful in attracting research grants, including property development and GST in Australia sponsored by Australian Tax Office.
Dr Woon-Weng Wong, Lecturer | School of Property, Construction and Project Management | RMIT
Dr. Wong is a Lecturer of Property Economics and Data Analysis in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. He received his PhD in Econometrics from Monash University in 2013. His research appears in leading international academic journals. He has held teaching positions at Monash University and RMIT University where he has supervised several PhD candidates to completion. Prior to academia, he worked as an economist in the Departments of Treasury and Finance, Industry; and other government agencies. Dr. Wong’s research applies econometric techniques and economics and finance theory to property markets. He has expertise in securitised property and its role in asset allocation strategies as well as evaluating the drivers of performance within the sector. In more recent work, he has expanded his field of research to include housing and commercial property; and the impact of climate change on the residential property sector. He has presented his work at academic conferences (peer reviewed) and serves as an academic referee for various journals relating to property and finance.
Dr Kingsley Tetteh Baako, Early Career Researcher and Lecturer  School of Property, Construction and Project Management | RMIT
Kingsley is an Early Career Researcher and Lecturer in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management at RMIT University. His research encompasses both qualitative and quantitative approaches to best answer research questions pragmatically; and seeks to extend research outcomes into policy considerations. His main areas of research interest are Housing Policy and Property Markets. He has published several research papers on the housing market in reputable journals including Energy Economics and Journal of Environment, Land and Policy. He has also served as a research assistant on several funded projects including for the ATO, AHURI and World Bank.  Some recent research proposals that Baako is involved in that demonstrate his skills include house prices and relationship with income inequality, transport infrastructure, and energy poverty. He is also part of the team investigating blockchain technology and land Issues in Ghana and macroeconomic determinants of house prices. Dr. Baako has attracted funding from the Australian Tax Office to conduct research into property development and GST in Australia.
