DFAT has multiple Property Leasing Officer positions available based in Canberra.

The opportunities
DFAT’s Overseas Property Office and Services (OPO) division manages the Australian Government’s international property network, including owned and leased estates, and a significant domestic property estate. This global property portfolio comprises over 1,000 owned and leased properties in 108 locations across five continents. The overseas owned estate was valued at $3.1 billion at 30 June 2023.
Multiple positions are available in the Strategy and Property Services Branch, which is responsible for the delivery of OPO’s strategic property planning, including asset management; business case development for capital works; leased estate management to maximise value-for-money outcomes; and formulation and execution of strategies to increase efficiencies in the management of the property portfolio.
These roles are based in Canberra.
Our ideal candidates
As a Property Officer you will play a critical role in supporting the management and operations of the international property portfolio. Our ideal candidates will have experience and/or qualifications in a property related discipline. Experience in commercial property leasing and asset management will be highly regarded.
The ideal candidate will have the following capabilities, knowledge, skills and personal attributes.
Capabilities:
- Ability to learn and adapt quickly to property management policies and procedures in an international environment.
- Strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Attention to detail in analysing and managing lease agreements, undertake procurements, and liaise with stakeholders, service providers and consultants.
Knowledge:
- Good understanding of property management principles and practices, including leasing, acquisition and divestment of commercial and residential properties.
- Assist in developing property strategies and risk management.
- Good understanding of contract management including administration process within the PGPA framework.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills (written and oral) for interacting with clients, stakeholders and team members.
- Problem-solving abilities to address client concerns and resolve property issues promptly.
- Time management skills to prioritise tasks effectively and meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn, understand and navigate the departmental property management system.
Behaviours:
- Client service-oriented approach with a focus on internal stakeholder satisfaction.

Key duties
The successful candidate will be required to support and assist section staff to:
- assist with property lease negotiations, acquisitions and divestments of property, and define deliverables, analysis of options, milestones and risks.
- coordinate inputs from relevant areas and stakeholders and engage service providers and consultants.
- undertake basic procurements and payment of invoices, as it relates to leasing, acquisitions, divestments and property related activities within the team.
- perform procedural, operational, administrative and business support activities that contribute towards agreed outcomes within the team.
- prepare basic written submissions, briefs, reports, minutes and other correspondence with internal, external stakeholders and consultants.
- organise appointments, correspondence and communications in a timely manner against competing priorities.
- effectively manage the production, dissemination and storage of information to facilitate improved communication within the team; and
- understand and operate relevant departmental operating systems and guide others in the use of such systems when necessary.
