Andrew Govey, Landsburys

Could you please tell us a bit about your current employment?
I am currently working at Landsburys Property in Sydney.  In my two years at Landsburys I have been exposed to a broad spectrum of property related work including valuation of residential development projects, market studies, compulsory acquisition and expert witness matters and feasibility studies.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
Still in the property industry. I enjoy the tangible aspect of property and the diversity of issues and matters that come with it.

You have completed the FPP program - has it refreshed your knowledge, brought new information to light or further developed your skills?
I've learnt some new skills which will be invaluable as a valuer, in particular some of the measurement techniques of properties which I was previously unaware of.

Which module(s) in particular did you enjoy?
The Risk Management Module was particularly enjoyable because it gave me an appreciation and insight into the operation of a valuation business.

How has the FPP program assisted with your professional development as a Valuer and also prepared you for your Professional Interview?
It has made me more aware of the role of the API and the structures in place that can guide and support my professional development which will extend beyond the day I sit for my professional interview.

David Hill, Jones Lang LaSalle

Could you please tell us a bit about your current employment?
I am currently employed as an Assistant Valuer at Jones Lang LaSalle. I commenced this role in June 2011 while still studying my postgraduate degree in property and have since gone full time after graduating. Since commencing with Jones Lang LaSalle, I have worked in Residential Development, Suburban and CBD Office, Retail and Industrial markets.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
I’m currently working in our Industrial Valuations team and really enjoying getting out of the city to explore the outer suburbs of Melbourne. The sheer scale of some of the new Industrial developments is mind blowing! I enjoy the construction aspect of Industrial buildings and I see myself sticking it out for a few years yet. Further down the track, I will have to see where the road takes me! Having the fundamental property skills acquired through valuations is an excellent skillset for any aspect or role within the property industry so there is no lack of opportunities out there.

You have completed the FPP program - has it refreshed your knowledge, brought new information to light or further developed your skills?
The FPP Program was a great way to brush up on the basics and further my skills in essential areas such as Leases and GST. There were also some great tips for data collection and the inspection process - it’s always beneficial to share ideas as many of these tips have been developed through experience. The program also offered a great insight into techniques utilised in alternate property sectors such as residential valuations which I am not directly exposed to in my current role.

Which module(s) in particular did you enjoy?
I particularly enjoyed the Corporate Real Estate module as it provided an insight into the strategic side of property management and is something that we are exposed to in our role as a valuer but often do not explore in great detail. The other modules I particularly enjoyed was the Professional and Written Communication modules as they provided some great tips on communicating in a clear and concise manner.

How has the FPP program assisted with your professional development as a Valuer and also prepared you for your Professional Interview?
The FPP Program has been a great study tool for preparing for my professional interview. Core issues such as GST and Leases are covered in detail and are relevant not only for the interview but also for the day to day responsibilities of a Valuer.

You have completed the FPP program – has it refreshed your knowledge, brought new information to light or further developed your skills?
Yes it has given me a grounding in important areas relating to valuation at a level not exposed to at University, like GST and Corporate Real Estate as well as a re-cap on fundamental areas like Code of Ethics and Methods of Measurement.

Which module(s) in particular did you enjoy?
Corporate Real Estate as it stepped out of the valuation space and provided something new and interesting.

How has the FPP program assisted with your professional development as a Valuer and also prepared you for your Professional Interview?
As mentioned above the program provides a critical re-cap of knowledge for the professional interview but also drills down into critical areas to the depth required so that candidates are more than prepared.

Mostly, the FFP Program has been more of a refresher course.

Which module(s) in particular did you enjoy?
The most beneficial module would be either the Preparation for the Professional Interview or the Professional Standards module, with both courses refreshing my memory with some aspects which I only come across from time to time.

How has the FPP program assisted with your professional development as a Valuer and also prepared you for your Professional Interview?
As stated above, rather than providing me with substantial new material it has primarily refreshed my memory on certain aspects of valuation. However it has provided me with a good base for the preparation of the professional interview.
